Part worn tyres in Braintree

Quality Checked Part Worn Tyres in Braintree

Part worn tyres are a real help when a tyre fails at the wrong time of the month, and we sell plenty of them. Every part worn tyre we fit is inspected inside and out, has well over the legal minimum tread, and is marked and sold in line with the rules that apply to part worn tyres in the UK. If a tyre does not pass our own check, it goes in the scrap pile rather than onto your car.

  • Inspected inside and out
  • Well over 1.6mm tread
  • Sold to UK part worn rules

01How we check a part worn tyre

We look at tread depth across the whole width, not just the middle. We check the sidewalls for cuts, bulges and kerbing damage, look inside the casing for old repairs and signs of being run flat, and check the date code so we are not selling you something ancient. Anything with cord showing, a bulge, or a repair in the wrong place is scrapped.

02When part worn makes sense, and when it does not

If you have an MOT next week, a car you are selling soon, or an unexpected blowout, a part worn tyre gets you legal and safe for a lot less money. If you are keeping the car a couple of years and doing regular motorway miles, a new mid-range tyre normally works out cheaper per mile. We will say which way we would go if it were our own car.

03Are part worn tyres legal?

Yes, selling part worn tyres is legal in the UK as long as they meet the required standards, are free from certain damage, and are marked correctly. That is the standard we work to. What is not legal is driving on a tyre below 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, and we will never fit anything close to that.

What our inspection actually covers

Every part worn tyre comes off the rack and gets checked properly before it goes near your car. Tread is measured across the full width, not just the middle, and anything that fails goes straight in the scrap pile.

  • Tread depth measured across the whole width
  • Sidewalls checked for cuts, bulges and kerb damage
  • Inner liner inspected for run-flat damage and old repairs
  • Bead area checked for fitting damage
  • Date code read so nothing ancient goes out

The law on part worn tyres in the UK

Selling part worn tyres is perfectly legal here, provided they meet the required standards, carry no prohibited damage such as cord exposure or bulges, have at least 2mm of tread across the full breadth and are marked 'PART-WORN'. That is the standard we work to. Separately, your minimum legal tread in use is 1.6mm across the central three quarters, all the way round — we will never fit anything close to that limit.

How long will a part worn tyre last?

It depends on the tread it starts with and how you drive. As a rough guide, a tyre fitted with 5 to 6mm has a good chunk of usable life ahead of it for typical Braintree mileage. We will tell you what we think you will get out of it so there are no surprises in six months.

When we will say no

We turn down part worn sales regularly. If your tracking is clearly out, a fresh tyre will scrub away on one edge in weeks, so it makes sense to fix the alignment first. If the other tyre on the same axle is nearly gone too, we will price the pair rather than send you out unbalanced.

How it works

Getting part worn tyres sorted, step by step

  1. 01

    Tell us the size

Read the sidewall to us or send a photo. We check the racks while you are on the line.

  2. 02

    We pull the options

You see the actual tyres, the tread depth on the gauge and the date code before you commit.

  3. 03

    Full inspection

Inside and out: sidewalls, bead, inner liner and any previous repairs.

  4. 04

    Fitted and balanced

New valve where needed, wheel balanced, pressures set and old tyre taken away.

Prices

What affects the price

A part worn tyre is normally a fraction of the cost of new, which is exactly why people ring us when a tyre goes at the wrong end of the month. Prices depend on size and what has come in, so call with your sidewall numbers and we will tell you what is on the racks today.

Ring 01376 433951 for a fitted price.

  • Size and availability

Common sizes like 195/65 R15 and 205/55 R16 move fast; unusual sizes come and go.

  • Tread left

More tread means more miles, and we price accordingly. We show you the gauge reading.

  • Brand on the casing

A part worn premium tyre with good tread is often better value than a new budget one.

  • One or a pair

We would rather match a pair on the same axle, and pairs usually price better.

Questions we get asked

Part Worn Tyres questions

The things Braintree drivers ask us most about part worn tyres.

How much tread do your part worn tyres have?

Comfortably more than the 1.6mm legal minimum. We will show you the depth gauge reading on the tyre before we fit it.

Can I mix a part worn tyre with a new one?

We would rather keep a matched pair on the same axle. If you bring us one worn tyre, we will tell you honestly whether the other side needs doing as well.

Do you have my size in part worn?

Stock moves quickly, so give us a ring on 01376 433951 with your size and we will check the racks while you are on the phone.
